Exercise Is Medicine | Your Prescription for Health
In 2007, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Medical Association (AMA) co-launched Exercise is Medicine (EIM) – a United States-based health initiative with the goal of making physical activity assessment and promotion a standard in clinical care. The scientifically proven benefits of physical activity remain indisputable, and they can be as powerful as any pharmaceutical in preventing and treating a range of chronic diseases and medical conditions.
The EIM program's goal is for health care providers to routinely assess physical activity as a “vital sign” at every patient interaction, provide brief advice, and refer patients to evidence-based fitness resources and professionals.
GEIST FITNESS is a Level 2 accredited fitness provider.
Exercise physiologists and personal trainers who are EIM certified are integral to the Exercise is Medicine program. An EIM fitness program can improve and/or reduce the following pre-existing medical conditions:
-
Breast cancer - Reduced risk of all-cause and breast cancer mortality
-
Colorectal cancer - Reduced risk of all-cause and colorectal cancer mortality
-
Prostate cancer - Reduced risk of prostate cancer mortality
-
Osteoarthritis - Decreased pain and improved function and quality of life
-
Hypertension - Reduced risk of progression of cardiovascular disease and reduced risk of increased blood pressure over time
-
Type 2 diabetes - Reduced risk of cardiovascular mortality. Reduced progression of disease indicators: hemoglobin A1c, blood pressure, blood lipids, and body mass index
